Strengthening public image with an environmentally sound, low-noise alternative to conventional, refrigerant-based in-transit cooling systems

The trucking business faces a number of hurdles. On the one hand, road-transport companies need to control operating costs in the face of rising diesel prices and high maintenance costs. On the other, remaining competitive hinges on timely deliveries with minimal or zero quality impairment as a result of transit.

In the case of chilled and frozen goods, this calls for precise control over the cold temperature chain. The ability to meet customer-specific temperature specifications is essential to avoid loss of quality and the prospect of claims for damages.

In the past, operators largely relied on refrigerants to maintain the desired temperature in their trucks or trailers. However, mechanical refrigeration units need a diesel engine to power a compressor that circulates the refrigerant. This means that the truck’s engine always has to be running – even if the vehicle is stationary.

Increasingly strict environmental legislation, growing concerns over the risk of refrigerant leakage and rising pressure to reduce noise in urban areas is fuelling demand for environmentally sound alternatives to conventional cooling processes.
